Introduction to Xi’an Middle School of Shaanxi Province
Xi’an Middle School of Shaanxi Province is the only middle school directly affiliated to the Educational Department of Shaanxi Provincial Government and among the first Model Senior Schools nominated by Shaanxi Province. Founded in 1905, it has a history of over 116 years. During the past century, the school has been discarding the stale ideas to keep abreast with the times, and its rich cultural heritage and remarkable achievements have both contributed to its widespread fame of being the cradle of talents. There are numerous alumni whose outstanding performance and achievements have profoundly influenced the whole province and even the nation, to name just a few: Wei Jiangchun, Zhang Dianlin and Wang Xifan, academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences; Bai Shaokang, assistant to the mayor of the city of Shanghai; Li Jing, deputy major of the city of Xi’an; Zhang Chaoyang, Chairman and CEO of the board of directors of Sohu; Ma Chao, vice chairman and president of Minsun Group Co., Ltd; Wu Tianming, renowned film director; Wu Sanda, calligrapher; Mao Qi, poet; Shi Guoqing, performing artist; Wu Jingan, actor and Su Xing, singer.
The school is located in Fengcheng 5th Road of Xi’an Economic and Technological Development Zone. Its campus covers an area of 258 mu (17.2 hectares) and the building area is 137,000 square meters. The people-oriented layout of the constructions on campus gives it an imposing appearance. With clean and elegant surroundings, distinct cultural atmosphere and all kinds of modern facilities, the school provides an excellent learning environment for all the students. There are nearly 100,000 books in Wenjing Pavilion Library, which bears the inscription by the late famous writer, Chen Zhongshi. The school stadium covers an area of more than 4000 square meters and its roofed stand can seat up to 3000 people. Thanks to its efficient group management, the Student Restaurant, equipped with a large and skilled kitchen staff as well as a robot cook, can cater for over 4000 students at the same time. The food there is not only abundant and nutritious but also safe and healthy; accordingly, our school has won the title of National Food Safety Model Unit for three consecutive years. More than 3600 students are living in the Student Apartment complete with 24-hour hot water, central air conditioning, heating apparatus, drinking water machines, telephone service, and more than 40 full-time wardens provide students with excellent life management and service.
Currently, there are approximately 5,000 students on campus and the number of staff is 350, among whom 260 are full-time teachers with 96 holding the Senior Teacher Certificate for High School and 13 teachers have obtained Full Senior Teacher Certificate for High School and Special Grade Teacher Certificate for High School. Moreover, 103 teachers have been awarded honours on national, provincial and municipal levels: model workers, excellent teachers, or advanced individuals etc., and 52 persons act as president or director of professional associations on municipal, provincial or national levels as well.
Having inherited a history of over a hundred years, our school firmly sticks to the management principle of being responsible for students’ life-long development, always adheres to the orientation of overall quality-oriented education with the object of cultivating excellent students who have cultural literacy, pioneering spirits, national consciousness and international visions, puts actively into practice the idea of teaching students how to behave, learn and develop themselves, makes the development of each student a priority in the education without any prejudice, and also creates chances for students at different levels or of different characters so that they can grow up and develop in a healthy and humanistic environment. The school has established various platforms for students to enhance self-discipline and virtues, expanded their knowledge and improve abilities and set up the first high school based Youth Party School and the first Young Volunteers Association in Shaanxi Province. We have also founded 20 associations such as February Literature Club whose honorary president is the late Chen Zhongshi, a famous writer as well as vice president of Chinese Writers Association, chorus bands, dancing clubs, Model United Nations, simulation of municipal government, archaeological and astronomy clubs etc. Other series of culturally-themed activities consist of Wenjing Lecture, Fengcheng Lecture, Zhaohui Forum, Tutoring Forum, and Red, White and Blue in Youth. A comprehensive psychology and self-discipline system is constantly operating to provide care for the psychological well-being of all the students and remedy their behavioral problems if necessary.
In recent years, more than 3700 students of this school have attended the training of Youth Party School, and more than 284 students have joined the Communist Party of China. Eight students have ranked 1st in liberal arts list and science list of the college entrance examination in Shaanxi Province. Key universities of 211 Project and 985 Project enroll around 70% of our graduates, the undergraduate admission rate remain above 98%, and more than 50 students are admitted to famous universities abroad every year. Xi’an Middle School of Shaanxi Province has won titles of the Advanced Collective in National Education System, National Best School with Quality Education Characteristics, National Traditional Sports Project School, National Science and Technology Innovation Model School, National Food Safety Model Unit, Zero Crime School of National Education Activities of Popularizing Law to Youth, Advanced Collective of Ethics Construction in Shaanxi Province, Advanced Collective of Labor Model in the City of Xi’an, among hundreds of other national, provincial and municipal awards. It has become the Studying and Training Base of Middle School Principals in Shaanxi Province and Subject Base of Ordinary Middle School and University Jointly Training Innovative Talents, Shadow Principal Practice Base of the Ministry of Education, Key Subject Research Unit of the Ministry of Education as well as Excellent Student Resource Base for Peking University, Tsinghua University, Zhejiang University, Fudan University and more than 30 other national key universities.
